Hausdorff measures, Hölder continuous maps and self-similar fractals

1993

Let f: A → ℝn be Hölder continuous with exponent α, 0 < α ≼ 1, where A ⊂ ℝm has finite m-dimensional Lebesgue measure. Then, as is easy to see and well-known, the s-dimensional Hausdorif measure HS(fA) is finite for s = m/α. Many fractal-type sets fA also have positive Hs measure. This is so for example if m = 1 and f is a natural parametrization of the Koch snow flake curve in ℝ2. Then s = log 4/log 3 and α = log 3/log 4. In this paper we study the question of what s-dimensional sets in can intersect some image fA in a set of positive Hs measure where A ⊂ ℝm and f: A → ℝn is (m/s)-Hölder continuous. In Theorem 3·3 we give a general density result for such Holder surfacesfA which implies…

Measure and dimension functions: measurability and densities

1997

During the past several years, new types of geometric measure and dimension have been introduced; the packing measure and dimension, see [Su], [Tr] and [TT1]. These notions are playing an increasingly prevalent role in various aspects of dynamics and measure theory. Packing measure is a sort of dual of Hausdorff measure in that it is defined in terms of packings rather than coverings. However, in contrast to Hausdorff measure, the usual definition of packing measure requires two limiting procedures, first the construction of a premeasure and then a second standard limiting process to obtain the measure. This makes packing measure somewhat delicate to deal with. The question arises as to whe…

A note on the distance set problem in the plane

2001

We use a simple geometric-combinatorial argument to establish a quantitative relation between the generalized Hausdorff measure of a set and its distance set, extending a result originally due to Falconer.

On the conical density properties of measures on $\mathbb{R}^n$

2005

We compare conical density properties and spherical density properties for general Borel measures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ . As a consequence, we obtain results for packing and Hausdorff measures $\mathcal{P}_h$ and $\mathcal{H}_h$ provided that the gauge function $h$ satisfies certain conditions. One consequence of our general results is the following: let $m, n\,{\in}\,\mathbb{N}, 0\,{\lt}\,s\,{\lt}\,m\,{\leq}\,n$ , $0\,{\lt}\,\eta\,{\lt}\,1$ , and suppose that $V$ is an $m$ -dimensional linear subspace of $\mathbb{R}^n$ . Let $\mu$ be either the $s$ -dimensional Hausdorff measure or the $s$ -dimensional packing measure restricted to a set $A$ with $\mu(A)\,{\lt}\,\infty$ . Then for $\mu$ -almos…

Planar Sobolev homeomorphisms and Hausdorff dimension distortion

2011

We investigate how planar Sobolev-Orlicz homeomorphisms map sets of Hausdorff dimension less than two. With the correct gauge functions the generalized Hausdorff measures of the image sets are shown to be zero.

The De Giorgi measure and an obstacle problem related to minimal surfaces in metric spaces

2010

Abstract We study the existence of a set with minimal perimeter that separates two disjoint sets in a metric measure space equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a Poincare inequality. A measure constructed by De Giorgi is used to state a relaxed problem, whose solution coincides with the solution to the original problem for measure theoretically thick sets. Moreover, we study properties of the De Giorgi measure on metric measure spaces and show that it is comparable to the Hausdorff measure of codimension one. We also explore the relationship between the De Giorgi measure and the variational capacity of order one. The theory of functions of bounded variation on metric spaces is us…

Which measures are projections of purely unrectifiable one-dimensional Hausdorff measures

2008

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a measure p, on the real line to be an orthogonal projection of XAl for some purely 1-unrectifiable planar set A.
